The Refugee Rebellion: 32 States Refusing #SyrianRefugees

The Refugee Rebellion: Majority of US States Don't Want Syrian Refugees

Barack Obama’s administration seems to be hell-bent on bringing in tens of thousands (more likely to become hundreds of thousands, using the “foot-in-the-door” tactic) of unvetted, unverified, and potentially dangerous Syrian “refugees” into the United States.

Thankfully, state governments have more sense than the Feds, and over two dozen governors have publicly stated that they will not cooperate with any resettlement efforts in their state.

Even though there may not be specific legal authority for the governors to block the resettlement efforts (I’m leaving that particular mess to the Constitutional lawyers), this “mini-rebellion” demonstrates the divide between the increasingly-overreaching federal government, and the state governments who actually listen to their constituents.

Over at TheArcOfInstability blog, there’s an updated map showing the current state-by-state status, as well as a listing of governors’ names, telephone numbers, and Twitter accounts. In addition, there are “Click-To-Tweet pre-written tweets, so you can quickly & easily send the governors a message (of protest, encouragement, or thanks, depending on their situation).

The Silence Of The Snowflakes, And The Death Of Discourse

By Anton Kaplenko

Author Note: This was originally written in 2012, in response to several then-current controversies (hence the references to 2012-era studies). Unfortunately, in the 3 years since, things have only gone from bad to worse. Columbia, Yale, and now Missouri. My intent is not to rehash those stories - there's plenty of online coverage, but to reiterate the conclusions, which apply today even more so than at the time of the original writing.

----------------------

If you've participated in, or even viewed, political discussions on the Internet, especially in "high-speed" forums such as Twitter, you may have noticed a curious way some people handle differences in opinion.

Instead of bringing facts and logical arguments to defend their points, they quickly descend into name-calling and personal insults, and eventually freak out and try to shut down the discussion. Insults, trolling, and ad hominem attacks are common in Internet discussions, but the specific response of silencing dissent is worth investigating as a separate issue.

I call this phenomenon, "the silence of the snowflakes". When a person has been told all their life that they're special and unique, "like a precious snowflake", they tend to handle criticism in a very personal and painful way.

This is the result of a generation raised with a focus on self-esteem at the cost of personal development, shielded from anything that may puncture their over-inflated balloon of self-worth. Wrapped throughout childhood and adolescence in the soft cotton of excuses, they finally emerge into the real world... and that's when reality smacks them in the face, usually pretty hard.

If you consider this phenomenon as the expression of a psychological syndrome (a group of related symptoms), several common traits emerge:
  • Inability to handle criticism
  • Inability to admit being wrong
  • Taking abstract arguments personally
  • Inability or unwillingness to maintain decorum (use of profanity, explicit sexual imagery, etc)
  • Disrespect of common social boundaries (threats - both verbal and of physical violence)
Sidetracking into nerd territory for a moment, this Ars Technica article exposes another manifestation of the same mental disbalance, this time as it applies to "fanboys" considering criticism of their favorite brands as a personal insult, and the consequences thereof.

Given the above-mentioned "precious snowflake" upbringing as well as the sorry state of our educational system, which results in a complete lack of ability to distinguish opinion from fact, it's not a surprise that the transposition of abstract arguments onto personal beliefs is not confined only to the political arena but extends into technology [and popular culture] as well.

Of course, no discussion about silencing dissent would be complete without mentioning the Brett Kimberlin saga. In an extreme example of using strong-arm tactics to shut down opposition, Kimberlin & his band of thugs have taken to real-world harassment tactics, from bombarding bloggers with lawsuits to actually calling 9/11 pretending to be the mark - and having SWAT teams break down innocent people's doors, guns drawn and 0.1 second away from shooting someone whose only "crime" was to expose the unpleasant truth about someone. Silencing dissent online is one thing. Silencing dissent by silencing the dissenters personally takes it to a whole new - and completely unforgivable - level.

The March 2012 survey conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project reveals some interesting differences between the ways people of different political affiliations use and respond on Social Networking Sites (SNS's). In particular, Question #3 asks "Have you ever blocked, unfriended, or hidden someone on a SNS because they: a.) Posted something you disagreed with, b.) Posted too frequently about politics, c.) Disagreed with something you posted, d.) Argued about political issues, or e.) Posted something that you worried would offend?"

As you can see from the chart, liberals are far more likely to engage in dismissive behavior (blocking/hiding/unfriending) than moderates or conservatives. Rather than engage the argument head-on, they prefer to end it, one way or another.

Liberals claim that it's the conservatives that are "waging a war on intellectualism", yet they engage in behavior that is completely anti-intellectual. Issues cannot be probed and dissected if the door is slammed shut on the discussion right from the start. These are the methods of sustaining a war against intellectualism. As such, who is REALLY waging this war?
There is a word for the kind of countries whose governments only allow 1 point of view, and a word for the type of regimes that punish anyone who questions the dominant point of view. But, I'm going to make a hard right turn and avoid Godwin's Canyon in this discourse.

Suffice it to say that suppressing discourse, silencing dissent, and treating intellectual opposition as subhuman is completely counter to the idea of a truly democratic society.

One of the principles that this country, this "shining city on a hill", was founded on, is the concept of free speech. Of all the nations, the United States should be the place with the least amount of silence, the land with the most boisterous debate and dissent and discord.

Instead, there grows a generation that feels not only entitled to their opinion, but also entitled to destroy the opinions of others.

Without free discourse, there can be no democracy.

The silence of the snowflakes is not only deafening, it's chilling. It carries implications far larger and far more dangerous than a SWAT team breaking down a blogger's door, or a student body clamoring for the resignation of a staff member.

The truly terrifying question is, what will happen when these overgrown toddlers get into positions of power in the media, legal system, and federal government?

The 25 Rules of Disinformation + 8 Traits Of The Disinformationalist + Examples

By Anton Kaplenko

This list was originally written by H. Michael Sweeney, who holds the copyright to this material.

It's not new (originally published in 1997), but it's a valuable resource that shouldn't be forgotten. An awareness of these methods & traits, as well as a heavy dose of skepticism, and knowledge of basic logic, will be tremendously helpful in debates of every type & level, but especially with respect to political discussions.

Original text in normal font, my commentary & additions in italics.
Some examples that illustrate specific points are included.

The 25 Rules of Disinformation

  Masks - deception

Author's Note: The 1 rule and last 5 (or 6, depending on situation) rules are generally not directly within the ability of the traditional disinformation artist to apply. These rules are generally used more directly by those at the leadership, key players, or planning level of the criminal conspiracy or conspiracy to cover up.

1. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.

Regardless of what you know, don't discuss it - especially if you are a public figure, news anchor, etc. If it's not reported, it didn't happen, and you never have to deal with the issues.

  • Exhibit "A": New York Times refused to discuss the Acorn scandal, until a week after 1000's of videos & stories have been published on the Internet.
  • Exhibit "B": New York Times refused to discuss the Van Jones scandal, until multiple letters to the newspaper forced the controversial resolution.
  • Exhibit "C": New York Times pub-ed with a half-assed apology / editorialsplaining of both.
2. Become incredulous and indignant.

Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. This is also known as the 'How dare you!' gambit.

  • Exhibit "A": Bernie Sanders, in full puppet mode, shouting down the inquiry into Hillary Clinton's "mis-handling" of classified E-mails:

3. Create rumor-mongers.

Avoid discussing issues by describing all charges, regardless of venue or evidence, as mere rumors and wild accusations. Other derogatory terms mutually exclusive of truth may work as well.

This method which works especially well with a silent press, because the only way the public can learn of the facts are through such 'arguable rumors'. If you can associate the material with the Internet, use this fact to certify it a "wild rumor" from a "bunch of kids on the Internet" which can have no basis in fact.

4. Use a straw man.

Find or create a seeming element of your opponent's argument which you can easily knock down to make yourself look good and the opponent to look bad.

Either make up an issue you may safely imply exists based on your interpretation of the opponent/opponent arguments/situation, or select the weakest aspect of the weakest charges. Amplify their significance and destroy them in a way which appears to debunk all the charges, real and fabricated alike, while actually avoiding discussion of the real issues.

5. Sidetrack opponents with name calling and ridicule.

This is also known as the primary "attack the messenger" ploy, though other methods qualify as variants of that approach. Associate opponents with unpopular titles such as "kooks", "right-wing", "liberal", "left-wing", "terrorists", "conspiracy buffs", "radicals", "militia", "racists", "religious fanatics", "sexual deviates", and so forth. This makes others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label, and you avoid dealing with issues.

  • Exhibits "A" through "ZZZZZ": a multitude of raised concerns about violent religiously-motivated terrorism, or violent crime due to uncontrolled immigration, being shouted down as "Islamophobia" or "Xenophobia" by those unwilling to discuss the issues. See also: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Geert Wilders, Nigel Farage.

6. Hit and Run.

In any public forum, make a brief attack of your opponent or the opponent position and then scamper off before an answer can be fielded, or simply ignore any answer. This works extremely well in Internet and letters-to-the-editor environments where a steady stream of new identities can be called upon without having to explain criticism or reasoning - simply make an accusation or other attack, never discussing issues, and never answering any subsequent response, since that would dignify the opponent's viewpoint.
  • Exhibit "A": nearly every "Letter To The Editor" section of every major newspaper in the country.

7. Question motives.

Twist or amplify any fact which could be taken to imply that the opponent operates out of a hidden personal agenda or other bias. This avoids discussing issues and forces the accuser on the defensive.

8. Invoke authority.

Claim for yourself or associate yourself with authority and present your argument with enough "jargon" and "minutia" to illustrate you are "one who knows", and simply say "it isn't so", without discussing issues or demonstrating concretely why or citing sources.

9. Play Dumb.

No matter what evidence or logical argument is offered, avoid discussing issues except with denials they have any credibility, make any sense, provide any proof, contain or make a point, have logic, or support a conclusion. Mix well for maximum effect.

10. Associate opponent charges with old news.

A derivative of the straw man - usually, in any large-scale matter of high visibility, someone will make charges early on which can be or were already easily dealt with - a kind of investment for the future should the matter not be so easily contained.

Where it can be foreseen, have your own side raise a straw man issue and have it dealt with early on as part of the initial contingency plans. Subsequent charges, regardless of validity or new ground uncovered, can usually then be associated with the original charge and dismissed as simply being a rehash without need to address current issues - so much the better where the opponent is or was involved with the original source.

11. Establish and rely upon fall-back positions.

Using a minor matter or element of the facts, take the "high road" and "confess" with "candor" that some innocent mistake, in hindsight, was made -- but that opponents have seized on the opportunity to blow it all out of proportion and imply greater criminalities which, "just isn't so."

Others can reinforce this on your behalf, later, and even publicly "call for an end to the nonsense" because you have already "done the right thing." Done properly, this can garner sympathy and respect for "coming clean" and "owning up" to your mistakes without addressing more serious issues.

12. Enigmas have no solution.

Drawing upon the overall umbrella of events surrounding the crime and the multitude of players and events, paint the entire affair as "too complex to solve". This causes those otherwise following the matter to begin to lose interest more quickly without having to address the actual issues.

13. "Alice in Wonderland" Logic.

Avoid discussion of the issues by reasoning backwards or with an apparent deductive logic which forbears any actual material fact.

14. Demand complete solutions.

Avoid the issues by requiring opponents to solve the crime at hand completely, a ploy which works best with issues qualifying for rule 10.

Also called the "Incomplete Solution" tactic.

15. Fit the facts to alternate conclusions.

This requires creative thinking unless the crime was planned with contingency conclusions in place.

16. Vanish evidence and witnesses.

If it does not exist, it is not fact, and you won't have to address the issue.
  • Exhibit "A": Barack Obama's college transcripts, publication record, etc - still unavailable after 7 years.
  • Exhibit "B": Vince Foster, also unavailable, but in a different manner, since July 20, 1993.

17. Change the subject.

Usually in connection with one of the other ploys listed here, find a way to side-track the discussion with abrasive or controversial comments in hopes of turning attention to a new, more manageable topic. This works especially well with companions who can "argue" with you over the new topic and polarize the discussion arena in order to avoid discussing more key issues.
  • Exhibit "A": many discussions of 2nd Amendment rights getting sidetracked with issues such as suicide prevention, mental health in general, the apparent negative correlation between the strength of gun control laws and incidence of violent crime in cities like Chicago and Baltimore, which, in all fairness, could be due to economic factors, racial tensions... see what I did there?
18. Emotionalize, antagonize, and goad opponents.

If you can't do anything else, chide and taunt your opponents and draw them into emotional responses which will tend to make them look foolish and overly motivated, and generally render their material somewhat less coherent. Not only will you avoid discussing the issues in the first instance, but even if their emotional response addresses the issue, you can further avoid the issues by then focusing on how "sensitive they are to criticism."
  • Exhibit "A": Rule 12 from Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" - "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."
  • Exhibit "B": CNBC debate moderator John Harwood asking Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump whether his campaign is a "comic-book version".
19. Ignore proof presented, demand impossible proofs.

This is perhaps a variant of the "play dumb" rule. (AK: Or a variant of the "demand complete solutions" rule - reject proof as insufficient to cover every single aspect of the debated issue, even if proof itself is valid/complete.)

Regardless of what material may be presented by an opponent in public forums, claim the material irrelevant and demand proof that is impossible for the opponent to come by (it may exist, but not be at his disposal, or it may be something which is known to be safely destroyed or withheld, such as a murder weapon.)

In order to completely avoid discussing issues, it may be required that you to categorically deny and be critical of media or books as valid sources, deny that witnesses are acceptable, or even deny that statements made by government or other authorities have any meaning or relevance.
  • Exhibit "A" (humorous):
    • "Candidate 1, what was the name of the ship that sank after hitting an iceberg?" - "The Titanic"
    • "Candidate 2, how many people died as a result of that disaster?" - "1,500 or so"
    • "Candidate 3, what were their names?"
20. False evidence.

Whenever possible, introduce new facts or clues designed and manufactured to conflict with opponent presentations - as useful tools to neutralize sensitive issues or impede resolution. This works best when the crime was designed with contingencies for the purpose, and the facts cannot be easily separated from the fabrications.

21. Call a Grand Jury, Special Prosecutor, or other empowered investigative body.

Subvert the (process) to your benefit and effectively neutralize all sensitive issues without open discussion. Once convened, the evidence and testimony are required to be secret when properly handled.

For instance, if you own the prosecuting attorney, it can insure a Grand Jury hears no useful evidence and that the evidence is sealed and unavailable to subsequent investigators. Once a favorable verdict is achieved, the matter can be considered officially closed.

Usually, this technique is applied to find the guilty innocent, but it can also be used to obtain charges when seeking to frame a victim.

22. Manufacture a new truth.

Create your own expert(s), group(s), author(s), leader(s) or influence existing ones willing to forge new ground via scientific, investigative, or social research or testimony which concludes favorably. In this way, if you must actually address issues, you can do so authoritatively.

See also: ACORN, SPLC, CAIR.

23. Create bigger distractions.

If the above does not seem to be working to distract from sensitive issues, or to prevent unwanted media coverage of unstoppable events such as trials, create bigger news stories (or treat them as such) to distract the multitudes.

24. Silence critics.

If the above methods do not prevail, consider removing opponents from circulation by some definitive solution so that the need to address issues is removed entirely. This can be by their death, arrest and detention, blackmail or destruction of their character by release of blackmail information, or merely by destroying them financially, emotionally, or severely damaging their health.

25. Vanish.

If you are a key holder of secrets or otherwise overly illuminated and you think the heat is getting too hot, to avoid the issues, vacate the kitchen.

Note: There are other ways to attack truth, but these listed are the most common, and others are likely derivatives of these. In the end, you can usually spot the professional disinformation players by one or more of seven (now 8) distinct traits:

8 Traits of the Disinformationalist

1) Avoidance.

They never actually discuss issues head-on or provide constructive input, generally avoiding citation of references or credentials. Rather, they merely imply this, that, and the other. Virtually everything about their presentation implies their authority and expert knowledge in the matter without any further justification for credibility.

2) Selectivity.

They tend to pick and choose opponents carefully, either applying the hit-and-run approach against mere commentators supportive of opponents, or focusing heavier attacks on key opponents who are known to directly address issues. Should a commentator become argumentative with any success, the focus will shift to include the commentator as well.

3) Coincidentality.

They tend to surface suddenly and somewhat coincidentally with a new controversial topic with no clear prior record of participation in general discussions in the particular public arena involved. They likewise tend to vanish once the topic is no longer of general concern. They were likely directed or elected to be there for a reason, and vanish with the reason.

4) Teamwork.

They tend to operate in self-congratulatory and complementary packs or teams. Of course, this can happen naturally in any public forum, but there will likely be an ongoing pattern of frequent exchanges of this sort where professionals are involved. Sometimes one of the players will infiltrate the opponent camp to become a source for straw man or other tactics designed to dilute opponent presentation strength.

5) Anti-conspiratorial.

They almost always have disdain for 'conspiracy theorists' and, usually, for those who in any way believe JFK was not killed by LHO. Ask yourself why, if they hold such disdain for conspiracy theorists, do they focus on defending a single topic discussed in a NG focusing on conspiracies? One might think they would either be trying to make fools of everyone on every topic, or simply ignore the group they hold in such disdain.Or, one might more rightly conclude they have an ulterior motive for their actions in going out of their way to focus as they do.

6) Artificial Emotions.

An odd kind of 'artificial' emotionalism and an unusually thick skin -- an ability to persevere and persist even in the face of overwhelming criticism and un-acceptance. This likely stems from intelligence community training that, no matter how condemning the evidence, deny everything, and never become emotionally involved or reactive.

The net result for a disinfo artist is that emotions can seem artificial. Most people, if responding in anger, for instance, will express their animosity throughout their rebuttal. But disinfo types usually have trouble maintaining the 'image' and are hot and cold with respect to pretended emotions and their usually more calm or unemotional communications style. It's just a job, and they often seem unable to 'act their role in character' as well in a communications medium as they might be able in a real face-to-face conversation/confrontation.
You might have outright rage and indignation one moment, ho-hum the next, and more anger later -- an emotional yo-yo.

With respect to being thick-skinned, no amount of criticism will deter them from doing their job, and they will generally continue their old disinfo patterns without any adjustments to criticisms of how obvious it is that they play that game -- where a more rational individual who truly cares what others think might seek to improve their communications style, substance, and so forth, or simply give up.

7) Inconsistent.

There is also a tendency to make mistakes which betray their true self/motives. This may stem from not really knowing their topic, or it may be somewhat 'freudian', so to speak, in that perhaps they really root for the side of truth deep within. I have noted that often, they will simply cite contradictory information which neutralizes itself and the author. For instance, one such player claimed to be a Navy pilot, but blamed his poor communicating skills (spelling, grammar, incoherent style) on having only a grade-school education. I'm not aware of too many Navy pilots who don't have a college degree. Another claimed no knowledge of a particular topic/situation but later claimed first-hand knowledge of it.

8) BONUS TRAIT: Time Constant. Recently discovered, with respect to News Groups, is the response time factor. There are three ways this can be seen to work, especially when the government or other empowered player is involved in a cover up operation:

1) ANY NG posting by a targeted proponent for truth can result in an IMMEDIATE response. The government and other empowered players can afford to pay people to sit there and watch for an opportunity to do some damage. SINCE DISINFO IN A NG ONLY WORKS IF THE READER SEES IT - FAST RESPONSE IS CALLED FOR, or the visitor may be swayed towards truth.

2) When dealing in more direct ways with a disinformationalist, such as email, DELAY IS CALLED FOR - there will usually be a minimum of a 48-72 hour delay. This allows a sit-down team discussion on response strategy for best effect, and even enough time to 'get permission' or instruction from a formal chain of command.

3) In the NG example 1) above, it will often ALSO be seen that bigger guns are drawn and fired after the same 48-72 hours delay - the team approach in play. This is especially true when the targeted truth seeker or their comments are considered more important with respect to potential to reveal truth. Thus, a serious truth sayer will be attacked twice for the same sin.

P.S. The 1st paragraph of the introduction to Michael Sweeney's book "Fatal Rebirth":
Truth cannot live on a diet of secrets, withering within entangled lies. Freedom cannot live on a diet of lies, surrendering to the veil of oppression. The human spirit cannot live on a diet of oppression, becoming subservient in the end to the will of evil. God, as truth incarnate, will not long let stand a world devoted to such evil. Therefore, let us have the truth and freedom our spirits require... or let us die seeking these things, for without them, we shall surely and justly perish in an evil world.

Karma In Action: Hoodie-Wearing Black Guy Armed With A Glock Gets Pulled Over...

Steven Hildreth, Jr.
By Anton Kaplenko

Arizona author and veteran Steven Hildreth, Jr., pretty much knew why a Tucson Police Department cruiser turned around and started following him. One of his headlights was out.

"The lights go on and I pull over," Hildreth wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday (10/27/2015) regarding the encounter.

“The officer asks me how I’m doing, and then asks if I have any weapons.” Hildreth replied, “Yes, sir. I’m a concealed carry permit holder and my weapon is located on my right hip. My wallet is in my back-right pocket.”

The officer explained that for his safety, he needs to disarm Hildreth for the stop. Hildreth said he understood, unlocked the car, and told the officer what type of holster he was wearing (7TS ALS).

The 2nd officer couldn't reach the holster, so the lead officer asked Hildreth to step out of the vehicle. Hildreth stepped out of the car, slowly, and one of the officers takes the Glock from the holster, complimenting the X3000U tactical flashlight attached to it. He also noticed Hildreth's military ID, and Hildreth told him he's with the National Guard.

The lead officer then pointed out that his registration card is out of date, and went back to the cruiser to check Hildreth's license. At this point, Hildreth writes in his Facebook post, "I know he’s got me on at least two infractions. I’m thinking of how to pay them." ("Maintenance of Lamps" and "Failure to Present Documents" (which includes expired documents), AFAIK.)

But as it turned out, he had nothing to worry about The officers gave Hildreth back his Glock, “locked and cleared” in an evidence container, and let him go with a warning to get his headlight fixed as soon as possible.

No "police brutality", nobody got thrown to the ground, not even a ticket.

Why? “Because you were cool with us and didn’t give us grief,” Hildreth recalled police telling him. “I smile. ‘Thank you, sir,’” he added.

Hildreth's Facebook post concludes:

“I’m a black man wearing a hoodie and strapped,”
“According to certain social movements, I shouldn’t be alive right now because the police are allegedly out to kill minorities.”“Maybe…just maybe…that notion is bunk. Maybe if you treat police officers with respect, they will do the same to you.

Police officers are people, too. By far and large, most are good people and they’re not out to get you. I’d like to thank those two officers and TPD in general for another professional contact.
We talk so much about the bad apples who shouldn’t be wearing a badge.

I’d like to spread the word about an example of men who earned their badges and exemplify what that badge stands for.

#BlueLivesMatter
#AllLivesMatter"
Here's a screencap of Hildreth's post:

 Hildreth - FB post

As of Thursday (10/29/2015) night, Hildreth’s Facebook post received over 440K likes, over 42K comments and over 238K shares.

I'm sure having a military ID helped, and I'm really sure Arizona cops are a bit more professional than the ones in a certain East Coast state that shall remain unnamed, but there are certain things to do and not to do, during a traffic stop, that could mean the difference between a verbal warning or a ticket - or worse.

Keeping in mind that cops are people too, and being concerned for their safety as well as being clear about your intentions and actions, can go a long way.

There's a whole list of "do's and dont's" for traffic stops, but, that's a topic for another post.

To The Stars, Or To The Caves?

By Anton Kaplenko

There are days I'm proud to be a part of this civilization. We have accomplished amazing things. We've harnessed the power of the atom. We've sent robots to explore other planets. We've sent out 2 messages to interstellar civilizations. We've built instruments that give us an understanding of the tiniest subatomic particle interaction and the largest galactic superclusters.

And yet, it seems like we stand on the brink of disaster. Wars rage across the world. Education is being replaced with propaganda. Morality is being replaced by political affiliation. Religions enslave and kill millions. And the so-called "leaders" are either idly standing by, or actively promoting it.

Humans are greedy, short-sighted beasts by nature. Everything we know as adults, has been taught to us. Morality, ethics, social norms, methods of communication, critical thinking skills, knowledge - those are all foreign to our nature. They're injected into us as individuals, because society needs functioning adults in order to survive. We're no better than cavemen, we just happen to have had better education.

Throughout the span of human evolution, societies have figured out ways to protect themselves, not only from external enemies, but from the bestial nature of individuals. Religion evolved as protection from the fear of death, and brought with it the added bonus of authoritarian morality. Various economic instruments evolved to allow individuals with skills and dedication to improve their financial position and secure the continued existence of their family units, their circle of friends and codependents, and by extension, to contribute to the continued existence of their neighborhood, city, and nation.

When the basic drives of human nature are harnessed for productive ends, amazing things happen.

The desire for fame and riches has propelled countless explorers, entertainers, and financiers to stardom of their respective eras. Greed is good, greed is what drives the world. Without greed, we wouldn't have the concept of nations, exploration and trade, and industrialization that massively improved individual output.

Intellectual curiosity made scientists discover incredible things. The early alchemists tinkered with various substances in search of the "Philosopher's Stone" - and eventually laid the foundation for chemistry. The Vikings looked at the Atlantic Ocean and wondered what's beyond the waves - and discovered North America - and centuries later, we've looked at the Moon and wondered what it's like - and built a rocket ship, and sent a man to another planet. When Hans Lippershey put together the first telescope in 1608, he couldn't have imagined that one day, the multi-million-dollar Hubble would look out across galaxies - but the builders of the Hubble (and Chandra, and ISS, and Voyager) are driven by the same intellectual curiosity.

Speaking of rockets, there's an interesting back-trace. If you've ever seen a Space Shuttle launch, you've noticed the 2 booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank:

Space Transportation System Number 6, Orbiter Challenger, lifts off from Pad 39A carrying astronauts Paul J. Weitz, Koral J. Bobko, Donald H. Peterson and Dr. Story Musgrave.

Those are "Solid Rocket Boosters" - SRB's. They're built in Utah and transported by train to Cape Canaveral. The engineers would have liked to make them bigger, for reasons of efficiency, but they're limited by the size of a horse's ass.

*blink*

"What?"

The SRB's have to be shipped by train.
The train runs through a tunnel in the mountains.
The width of the tunnel is slightly larger than the width of the tracks.
The US standard railroad gauge is 4' 8.5".
Why is it that width? Because the US railroads were built by British expats, and that's the gauge of railroads in the UK.
Why is that the gauge in the UK? Because they were built by the same companies that built the original pre-railroad tramways.
Why are the tramways that width? Because the tram cars were built with the same tools & templates as horse-drawn wagons of the pre-Industrial era, which used that wheel spacing.
Why did they use that spacing? To match the existing ruts on the roads, and not destroy the wheels on long journeys.
Why were the ruts spaced like that? Because the ruts were caused by Roman war chariots, drawn by 2 horses - and the dimensions of the chariot took into consideration the width of the widest parts of 2 horses.

So, the most advanced vehicle mankind has ever built is limited by the width of a horse's ass.

This is a metaphor.

Even as we strive to reach ever higher, we're bound and limited by the constraints of the past. And just as the Space Shuttle is limited by the dimensions of equine derriere, humanity as a whole is limited by the built-in drives and desires that have been programmed into our DNA over 1000's of years.

Therein lies the problem. We really haven't evolved beyond our bestial natures. If we did, it wouldn't be quite so easy for the puppeteers to strip the veneer of civilization from the minds of millions, and throw them into a feeding frenzy.

"Destroy them! They're Enemies of the People!", screams a Communist. And the crowd applauds, as the dissidents are sent to death camps.

"Destroy them! They're inferior!", screams a Nazi. And the crowd murmurs, "das ist gut", as the Jews are herded into the ovens.

"Destroy them! They're Infidels!", screams a mullah. And the crowd gets their knives and explosives ready.

"Destroy them! They don't think like we do!", screams a politician. And the crowd goes after "the undesirables".

If we had truly evolved beyond the caveman levels, we would not be so susceptible to these crude methods of manipulation. Yet all it takes is one book, one charismatic leader, one pseudoscientific theory, one difference of opinion - and millions are doomed. These methods are crude, but cruelly effective - precisely because the powers that be KNOW that we haven't evolved.

Have you ever wondered, Dear Reader, why post-apocalyptic movies, and zombie films and videogames, are so popular lately? Could it possibly be an expression of vicariously living out violent outbursts? When the mass consciousness is prodded and stimulated into unbounded violence, it's only natural to want to pull that trigger. Laws stop the majority from committing actual violence, but the desire to see the trigger pulled, and an enemy's brain explode, is ever-so-delicious.

And so, a convenient target is presented, a target all can agree on. Who'd want to defend a zombie? Or an Enemy Of The People in Soviet Russia, or a Jew in Nazi Germany, or a Christian in modern-day Syria?
It's a safety valve, offered as a stopgap to satiate the re-awakened thirst for destruction. Stay seated, watch the violence, sip your Cokes, play it out in your minds.

Have you wondered why there's been a dramatic increase in mass shootings, virtually unknown before the 1980's? It has nothing to do with guns, guns have been around for centuries and yet this obsession with violent outbursts is a relatively recent phenomena. Could it possibly have something to do with the culture of entitlement, where men are trained by the media to expect certain things, and when they don't get them, they go off on a rampage? (This isn't a gender-bias thing, it's statistics - the vast majority of mass shooters are male, after all.).

We haven't evolved at all. We have acquired a thin veneer of civilization. All that's stopping it from being stripped is individual morality and critical thinking. Unfortunately, all too often, morality is subsumed by party politics, and critical thinking is bred out by an educational system designed for obedience. It's up to each individual, personally, to decide which path they want to follow.

We have the technological and informational tools to access the sum total of the world's knowledge, and to colonize the Solar System. We're standing at the threshold of a singularity, and we have the biotech to increase lifespan to 300 years or more, and we have the space vehicles to build bases on the Moon.

We're facing a choice, as a civilization, as a species.

Do we follow the shining path of scientists and explorers (and bankers who finance them, and industrialists that build factories to produce their tools), and reach for the stars?

Or do we allow the politicians, the religious fanatics, and the social engineers, to strip the veneer of civilization from our selves, and go back to the metaphorical caves? Do we "vote the party line" and damn the consequences? Keep in mind that the tools of manipulation are evolving exponentially. Do we really want to end up in a "Hunger Games" universe and hope for the statistical fluke of a Katniss to save us?

"2001: A Space Odyssey" - or "1984"?

That's YOUR choice, as an individual.

Morality - or party line.
True tolerance - or religious hatred.
Acceptance of others as equals - or racial/ethnic division.

The line between good and evil isn't drawn across battlefields.
It's drawn across your heart.
Where do you stand?

Preparation B: Bernie Sanders is a hemorrhoid by definition

You know, at this point, I’m almost tempted to wish that Sanders wins. Maybe then these morons will actually learn what Socialism is REALLY like. It’s impossible to undo 60+ years of progressive education with anything less than a swift kick in the teeth.
You want to “make the rich pay their ‘fair share'”? Sure. Let’s just tax them at 90%+ and seize assets. Just don’t bitch when they leave and won’t create more wealth. Remember, THEY have other countries they can go to. YOURmobility is pretty much done for.
You want to “silence our enemies”? Those “enemies” being anyone who disagrees with the government’s insane policies? You got it. Complete control of the press. Just don’t bitch when YOUR opinion is suppressed, and you’re sent to a “re-education camp” for 10 years for telling a joke.
You want to “stop talking about the Emails”? Sure. Just don’t act all shocked when those in power commit progressively more terrible crimes, because YOU, yes YOU, Sanders voter, have given them permission to commit acts of treason and hand-wave them away.
You want nationalized healthcare? You got it. All hospitals are now run by the state. With the same efficiency as the DMV, and the same compassion as the IRS. Just remember, when you’re told that you don’t “need” that CT scan and you’re dying of cancer, YOU voted for this, YOU set up a system that gives absolutely zero fucks about you as an individual. You’re a percent sign on an actuarial table, and you’re not worth the cost of treatment.
You’ve voted for being a number on a piece of paper. You’ve voted to abrogate your OWN Constitutional rights. You’ve voted to give the government control over every aspect of your life, because Socialism simply cannot function otherwise.
Welcome to Statism. Where the individual means nothing, and the State means everything. Welcome, Sanders voter. Enjoy your stay.
And if you think I’m exaggerating about any of these… keep in mind that just because you haven’t read history books, doesn’t mean such things didn’t happen already. In real countries, to real people, over the course of very real years and decades.
But, look on the bright side, there’ll be free parking for all the unicorns.
FEEL THE BERN.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Asylum: The Syrian Trojan Horse

By Anton Kaplenko
Anton on Twitter:  @akaplenko

As the crisis in Syria intensified, the European leaders opened the borders to thousands of refugees. Or so they thought.

After several months of practically unchecked immigration, the citizens of Europe noticed a strange pattern. There were fewer and fewer women and children, and more and more men. People began to ask questions, such as "aren't these guys supposed to be back home, you know, fighting for their country?" and "if they're so desperate, how come they're not applying for asylum in the 1st country they reach, as per EU regulations, why are they demanding to be let in to the countries which offer the best benefits?".

Where are the women and children?

These concerns were quickly shut down with a staged photo of a child, shown crawling on the ground in front of a blurred line of policemen with riot shields.

Nevermind that the photo was part of a staged shoot (that kid didn't change the clothes by himself, and he sure as hell didn't make those drawings)...

...it quickly went viral, as an iconic symbol of "poor oppressed refugees vs evil cops".

The ruse worked. Dissent was pushed back, as the bleeding-heart crowd picked up the #RefugeesWelcome hashtag and shouted down anyone voicing concerns about the unchecked, un-monitored immigration wave.

The dissenters were right to be concerned, however.

Recently, a plethora of images emerged that show an even darker side of the Hijra Immigration. Just as anti-immigration groups warned, Jihadis masquerading as terrorists are sneaking into Europe by the dozen.

Granted, this isn't FBI-level facial recognition & matching, but with several hundred such "militant-to-immigrant" matches already found by amateur sleuths, there's a definite cause for concern.

The European news media is flat-out ignoring this news, despite groups like "EU Militia Watch" (@EU_MilitiaWatch on Twitter) and others, posting dozens if not hundreds of these matched images online - for days on end.

Of course, this is the same European media that flat-out ignored the massive (10,000-20,000 or more people) protests against the Islamization of Europe and against the "open-borders policy" of the European Union, that have broken out in multiple cities across Germany, France, and other Western European nations.

Only after the protests have grown too large and too numerous to be ignored, did a semblance of news coverage emerge.

I can already hear some readers asking, "but we're in the USA! Why should we care about what happens in Europe?"

Well, to start with, even though we're protected by the "Fortress Effect" of major oceans, the Obama Administration is doing everything in its power (and of course, on our dime... but I digress) to import at least 100,000 of these "refugees" to America. That number started at 30,000 and quickly grew to 100,000, by the way... who knows what the final tally will be?

Putting aside the questions of "why are we importing refugees while we have our own homeless people sleeping in the streets?", "why are we still calling them 'refugees' even after official statistics show that 75%-80% of them are men between 18 and 45 years of age, i.e. the demographics of deserters?", and "aren't we weakening the Syrian Army even further by allowing these able-bodied "men" to desert, thus making ISIS' job even easier?" - after this proof that yes, there are plenty of war criminals and Islamic radicals posing as "refugees", how insane do we have to be to intentionally bring known criminals to our land?

Second, most of the Europress outlets share the same owners as many US media outlets. For example. the Bertelsmann Group owns 54 TV channels and 29 radio stations in Europe - as well as Random House Publishing, Parents magazine and National Geographic in the US. News Corporation owns the British Sun and the American Fox News. And so on, and so on.

If they're going to suppress this information in Europe, what makes you think they'll be any more honest or forthcoming in their US coverage? european_media_tycoons
So, this is what we have to look forward to. Among the planned importation of at least 100,000 of these "Refujihadis", statistically, there are bound to be a few "radical elements".

And of course, considering the absolute lack of any controls, vetting, or oversight - practically a hallmark of everything that this administration does, let alone anything immigration-related - there's no way to know for sure.

Fortunately, some Presidential candidates are seeing through this ruse. Donald Trump compared it to the Trojan Horse:
Trump on ISIS Trojan Horse

As the matching photosets showing the clear and present threat in Europe show, the concerns of Mr. Trump and others are, indeed, justified.
