It took seven years for the Obama administration to produce a policy plan to supposedly reduce gun violence in America. The problem with Obama's Tuesday speech is that it was a purely political statement ladened with emotion, innuendo and proven falsehoods. But, to the ignorant it was a the promise being kept by Obama almost eight years ago. Forget that Obama's latest pronouncements are questionably unconstitutional, functionally meaningless and a danger to law abiding gun owners and any legitimate buyer seeking to buy a firearm.
What we saw Tuesday was pure political theater and mostly a rehash of what liberals have been kicking around for years. If there is any good news, it's that there isn't anything in Obama's half truths, misstatement and delusional ideas that can't be met and countered by Republicans, assuming, of course, that Republicans in Congress have the will to confront Obama's multifaceted policy points.
There is no substantial or consequential element within Obama's plan that will lead directly to either a national registry or beyond to confiscation, so conspiracy theorists will have to wait for another day and significant changes in gun control policy to make that claim. That's not to say that such a situation couldn't occur. Just not with the present circumstances.
Obama knows that those two objectives, a national registry and confiscation, would be met with instant and extreme opposition by Americans justly enraged by such blatant unconstitutional actions. Even on a subtle and incremental level, those two elements would be impossible to achieve in the remainder of Obama's term.
But, Obama's challenge to the Constitution is meant to be incremental, one degree at a time, reaching beyond his term of office and, hopefully for Obama, giving Hillary a foundation upon which to achieve further advances in gun control. It should be noted that Hillary has already publicly announced that she will pick up the liberal gauntlet aimed at further gun control.
The one unspoken statistical set directly related to the Obama administration's failure to control and contain the illegal use and distribution of illegal guns, shows a consistent decline in gun related crime prosecutions since Obama took office. Obama nowhere mentions the DOJ entering plea bargains in increasing numbers with hard core criminals who have engaged in gun related crimes, only to plea bargain away a majority of the gun related charges.
In 2015 there were 6,002 criminal weapons convictions. This is 5.8% LOWER than the previous year, 15.5% LOWER from the previous five years and 34.8% LOWER than the previous 10 years, most of which covers Obama's two terms of office to date.
In conclusion, Obama's actions to increase federal gun control through Executive Orders has two purposes. It fulfills Obama's pledge to the liberal regressive radical left to do what he could do to increase control over law abiding Americans and their guns. It's all about control over the political right. It further is intended to rally liberals in the face of the upcoming presidential election later this year on November 8th. Whether it rebounds against Democrats and brings the political right closer together to get out and vote against Hillary "Cankles" Clinton, remains to be seen.
