One thing Americans can be thankful for this week is that the majority of us are not in Brussels and enduring a brutal lockdown caused by heightened terror threats. In the wake of the Paris attacks, the Belgian government is scrambling to rout out a network of Islamic extremists suspected of planning similar attacks in Brussels. This means the city is on lockdown and will remain so while the threat is considered "serious and imminent."
The Guardian describes a depressing and bleak look at life in the city of Brussels:
Armoured vehicles and soldiers remained deployed throughout the historic centre of the de facto capital of Europe, and at major stations. Most shops, cafes and banks, most government offices, all museums and cinemas were “exceptionally” closed, according to the hastily typed notices pinned to their windows. About 300,000 children did not attend classes or creches, and universities were shut. The metro and its feeder lines were suspended.
However, the people dealing with the terror anxiety have found their own way of combating stress - cat memes. Who knew Belgians could be so funny and their cat memes so effective and infectious in lightening the mood of a terrible situation? God love em and keep them safe.
