Unplugged & Renewed

For the last week I have been unplugged. Is that what it’s called? I don’t know, I wasn’t out in the wilderness without civilization or electricity or anything, but I was mostly disconnected from social media. I was too busy enjoying real moments and making lasting memories with people I love.

I hosted my best friend and her darling 1 year old daughter. She toddled around and flirted with my 2 year old son. They made many messes, kept us on our toes, and, of course, we took tons of pictures.

We attended a beautiful wedding surrounded by people who have left lasting imprints on our lives, yet we spend far too little time actually connecting with. I’m not talking about the random “Like” on photos on Facebook or seeing what they ate for dinner via Instagram. That’s not really connecting, though I think we often fool ourselves into believing it is.

We brunched with old co-workers and bosses that are more family than friends. They cooed over our little ones and we reminisced a decade of memories. We drank bottomless Mimosas, laughed until our sides hurt, and genuinely grew misty-eyed when it was over.

I flew (alone!) with the kiddo on a spontaneous trip to meet my sister at Disney World. Her job had her passing from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale with 2 days off in Orlando. The idea struck her, she invited, and I thought, “Why the hell not?!?” The travel was brutal, but the end result worth it. My sister and I reveled in every moment. The shining toddler eyes seeing the magic of Disney for the first time. Doing stupid dances and singing every song we know to entertain him during the 45 minute wait for “It’s A Small World.” Toasting champagne in “France” at Epcot. Spoiling ourselves rotten with souvenirs. A much needed sister heart to heart over a bottle of wine.

All this amazing life was happening and love was being shared during a time when it seems like the world was going to hell in a handbasket. I knew the basic headlines. I’d been praying for the victims of the atrocious acts in Paris. But I was blissfully unaware of the day to day stuff I am normally so on top of.

I came back online and asked Twitter what I’d missed.

Welp, I asked for it! I spent 2 days reading to catch up on the recent happenings. I immediately wished I was still laughing with my best friend, toasting the bride and groom, or hugging my sister. I certainly need to unplug more often. Maybe not for so long (and definitely not because I try to squeeze so many things into one week) but certainly enough to enjoy the moments that are happening all around us while our Twitter timelines and Facebook newsfeeds fly by.

Let. Them. Fly.
