Gun sales background checks spike to highest June level since the FBI began keeping such statistics in 1999.

By Rob Janicki

Background checks for gun sales spiked 11% in June compared to last year, making it the busiest June ever, according to the FBI's background check data.

Last month the FBI conducted nearly 1.53 million background checks, which are required for all in-store purchases, but not for sales at gun shows or between individuals. That's the highest volume of checks in June since 1999, when the FBI started keeping track.

Gun control liberals have been pressed to explain the growing purchases of guns in the United States by claiming that the number of households having guns and the number of first time gun buyers is actually decreasing.  Of course liberals offer no statistical evidence to prove their assertion, which about par for the course of their fact fabrications.

Michael Bazinet, spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry group, said the increase is driven in part by the influx of more women and first-time gun owners into the market.

I spend two Saturday afternoons a month in my local gun shop talking guns with the salesmen and occasionally other gun owners.  My experience is very similar to that of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

More women are coming in with male escorts looking at and buying handguns in particular.  Gun manufacturers are marketing more female friendly guns than ever before.  Forget the colors being marketed toward women and pay more attention to gun manufacturers marketing smaller caliber guns to women that have less recoil, noise and much more shooter friendly.  I met one woman who started out with a .380 Auto from Ruger and after developing her shooting skills, moved up to a 9mm semi-auto that the guys use.

Women are finding target shooting to be a relaxing sport that they can enjoy with other women just as well as they can enjoy shooting with their male mates or friends.  But, most women, when asked, are more concerned about their personal safety and that of their family, when it comes to gun ownership and use.

Women aren't the only growing segment of gun buyers.  More young people in southern California, as an example, are participating in shooting sports based upon all the results I see from local shooting events and posted in NRA news releases and CR&PA (California Rifle & Pistol Association) sponsored events.  I suspect that similar growth in youth participation exists across the country, especially in conservative red states.

Since I am a life member of these two organizations, I receive the monthly NRA magazine, The Rifleman with national events results.  I also receive the CR&PA monthly news letter highlighting all the local gun events in California.  The cumulative effect is to see a growing participation in the shooting sports by women and youth.  This increased participation is the overall driving force, in my opinion, to increased gun sales across all age and sex demographics.

Liberals will have increasing difficulty in persuading Americans to accept greater controls over guns and gun ownership.  Gun ownership is growing in America as liberals fall farther behind in their attempts to make the 2nd Amendment an historical relic.  In those states with concealed carry permits that can be reasonably acquired, the increase in women receiving concealed carry permits is astronomical.  Texas and Florida concealed carry permits for women have exploded.  All other states have seen rising numbers of concealed carry permits going to women.  I doubt these women will be voting for Hillary anytime soon.

  1. A couple of years ago, when the kiddies came for Christmas, I put my Browning Auto away and never took it out again. Yesterday I mentioned to my husband it was time to work on it, again. Great minds think alike. Good article, Rob. Thanks.
