Kasich campaign in Ohio: A slingshot to somewhere or nowhere?

By Rob Janicki

Ohio Governor John Kasich continues to 'trump'et the idea that when he wins the Ohio presidential primary that it will somehow propel him into top tier contention with Donald Trump.  Not only do I question this claim, but I now question Kasich's very judgment in thinking that this is a real possibility.  But, in politics, all may not be what it appears to be on the surface.

Kasich is currently 0 for something like 24 in state primaries and caucuses.

I simply cannot understand Kasich's reasoning on any level, except for one possibility.  Is Kasich simply auditioning for the number two slot on a Trump ticket?  Kasich's delegate count, as small as it is, might be just enough to put Trump over the line at some point in the race for the GOP nomination process as it enters the convention in Cleveland with no candidate commanding the magic 1237 delegates to win the nomination outright.

Kasich's polling numbers have him very close to Trump on the threshold of the vote in Ohio and should that increase ever so much and Kasich wins Ohio, that delegate count may be enough to give Kasich the leverage he believes he  needs to make a deal with Trump.  My advice to Kasich is watch out.  Trump is the master of the deal, or at least that's what he keeps telling us, and Trump may well believe he simply doesn't need John Kasich on the ticket under any circumstances.

All that said, John Kasich could become an asterisk in the history of the GOP 2016 nomination process.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio is asking his Ohio supporters to vote for Kasich, as if doing so will throw a wrench in Trump's seemingly inevitable GOP nomination.  I'm thinking it will only give Kasich more leverage with Trump when no one goes into the GOP convention with the magic 1237 delegates committed to them.  More delegates for Kasich, more leverage for Kasich in dealing with Trump.  Just a thought.
