This year my son entered the great, big world of kindergarten and so far it's been real interesting. My son is the wiggle worm and the social bee buzzing around the class. This is a part of his personality that I would never change, but it can cause minor difficulties in the classroom when it's time to buckle down and tackle serious work.
Evidently, that was the cause of a bit of controversy yesterday. When I checked his backpack, I found a folded piece of construction paper that had "To: Bailey, From: Lucas" written on the front. Inside was a kid's drawing with some words at the top. Before examining any further, I asked my son what the note was about. He said it was an apology. When I asked what the apology was for, he said, "Lucas called me a big fathead."
I burst out laughing, now connecting the dots and words that accompanied the drawing. Then I donned the serious mom face and asked "Why did he do that?" My son shrugged and said "I don't know; I guess I was annoying him" which made me chuckle further. Then, of course, we had a talk about his role and responsibility in the classroom. After that . . . the issued was closed.
I didn't sympathize and ask him how what Lucas said made him feel. I didn't email the teacher and complain about another student. I'm not a PC parent and will not raise my son to believe he is a special snowflake. It was apparent that he didn't care what Lucas said and was cool with the apology which I showed to my husband who said, "What kind of apology is that? He's still calling him a fathead" which made me chuckle again.
