As expected, the parents of the late Michael Brown, the 18 year old not so gentle giant and street thug that was killed in Ferguson, MO, last August by police officer Darren Wilson, will file a wrongful death civil suit against the City of Ferguson. The tragedy of the death of Michael aside, the parents are left without a son that lived with one of his grandmothers and which they did not have daily contact. Having been in the national spotlight, the parents are left with the last thing to make them relevant in their little world. Sue somebody, anybody, to make a buck, comes to mind.
The family of Michael Brown, a black 18-year-old killed in Ferguson last summer by a white police officer, will file a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, attorneys for the family said on Wednesday.
Without a chance of gaining any monetary remuneration from Police Officer Darren Wilson, who was exonerated by a Grand Jury from any legal liability in the death of Michael Brown, the only other target available was to sue the City of Ferguson.
The filing has been expected since the family said last month it would file the civil case.
That announcement came a day after the U.S. Justice Department cleared Wilson of any civil rights violations in the shooting of Brown last August. But the department's report found racial bias and a pattern of illegal actions against African-Americans by the Ferguson Police Department.
Michael Brown's parents and their attorneys are basing their law suit on a non binding opinion from the Department of Justice that the City of Ferguson may have engaged in a pattern of racial bias in enforcing the law in Ferguson. Since the DoJ has not filed any legal action against the City of Ferguson for any violation of law under civil rights anti discrimination laws, it may be a bit premature for the Brown parents to file a civil law suit at this time. However, that does not appear to be an impediment to the parents or their attorneys.
I'm not saying that Michael Brown's parents are crass opportunists seeking to cash in from Michael's almost predictable death based upon his behaviors, but ....
